Howarth Lemmel was born in England in 1863. She eventually married a
wealthy man who left her once she became blind. At age 55 she heard a
statement that inspired her hymn. "So then, turn your eyes upon Him,
look full into His face and you will find that the things of earth will
acquire a strange new dimness." She wrote the verses of the hymn the
same week as it was "dictated to her by the Holy Spirit". She had a
family friend write down all of her hymns before she forgot them
because she had no way of writing. She wrote nearly 500 hymn and passed
away in 1961 a few days before her 98th birthday.
